Why the Fat Smoker? Any coach will tell you that explaining to a client that being overweight or smoking is bad for their health is unlikely to have any effect on their behaviour. The reason is that they already know. If they have not taken action as a result, restating the obvious adds nothing. A health scare (such as suffered by Maister himself, now a slimmer ex-smoker) may be needed to prompt action.
Similar barriers arise in business, yet a "scare" may also prove terminal. Taking action before this point is reached is the essence of good business. Those who have previously read Maister's writing on Professional Service Firms will appreciate his practicality and his relevance to the sector.
